GOD SONNET
My god does not ask me to bend my knee,
Prostrate myself before a rood o’er me.
My god does not call me five times a day
To face one way the while I chant and pray.
My god tells me only to do my best.
Hurt no one else, and you will pass the test
That I give all those here on earth to do:
Take care of yours and yourself. Be true
To your life-supporting drives. Let no man
Say you burdened him. And let no woman
Say you enslaved her. And let no small child
Say tearing, “I was left alone and wild.”
God, not a burden to be ever borne;
God’s lamp, a beacon to the sunny morn.
